The Household Personal Gaming of the Year Awards for 2025
Alright, how was this year in your family? Was it truly wonderful as you pretended on Facebook? Full of top marks for the kids and elaborate themed fancy dress gatherings for the parents? Or was it a sea of frustration with only rare entertaining moments? Could any part be actually real, or are we all digitally altered AI slop beings with unrealistic teeth?
I have gathered my thoughts for a chat, whether they wanted to or not, to debate the crucial thing in a calendar year: which video games we played the most. Without further ado:
Title First Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my definitive list."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "trying to find adequate healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Game Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. Point taken.
Release Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her avatar has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her big sister has in the real world.
Game the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Release I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to build character so he can grow up and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted deck building digital pastime, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a classic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my demons so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just didn’t have the focused attention to give it what it needed earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the early morning after appropriate hospitality.
Game That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was the previous year's sleeper hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I literally would play any time. Combine that with the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Title I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a technical issue in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I mention that verbatim, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a bastard-hard Metroidvania-esque thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". Great fun. I get that it looks ace and is ideal if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when all games were like this, and I'm over it. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Toss-up between business deals that caused concern, and premium pricing. Both morally indefensible and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or phone use, but it is sore like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
