The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Use of Generative AI for New Project
The developer behind acclaimed role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, sparking immense excitement within the gaming community. However, recent statements from the company's figurehead have added a new dimension to the conversation, touching on the team's approach toward generative artificial intelligence.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a latest message, Larian's director detailed that the team is utilizing machine learning for specific supporting functions. These include fleshing out presentation materials, creating initial artistic references, and drafting placeholder copy.
Importantly, Vincke made clear that the end material in the game will be crafted exclusively by real writers. "Our team is writing all the content in-house," he affirmed.
Our studio is constantly expanding our pool of storytellers and are currently putting together narrative groups.
Given that concept art is being specifically mentioned — we presently have 23 artistic staff and have roles to fill for further artists.
All our efforts we do is supplementary and focused on letting our team spend greater focus on the creative process.
Any machine learning application applied correctly is supplementary to a creative team routine, not a substitute for their talent.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The admission of employing this technology originally provoked unease among portions of the fanbase. In response, Vincke issued more elaboration on public forums.
"We use these tools to gather inspiration, just like we use Google and physical media," he stated. "In the conceptual ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then swap out with hand-crafted illustrations."
He continued, "Our studio recruits talent for their unique talent, not for their ability to replicate what a algorithm proposes."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had in the past detailed the team's targeted strategy to this technology, categorizing its use into key functions:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes refining animations, audio processing, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using systems to rapidly prototype rough mock-ups of mechanics to experiment with concepts before expensive implementation.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could one day enhance innovative player agency, particularly in managing dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.
He explicitly noted that core creative domains — like visual art — are are in no way departments where the team is replacing artistic talent. In fact, Larian is actively hiring in these exact roles.
"We are neither releasing a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not planning on trimming down teams to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
