Prison Shock: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He battled the legal system and the legal system won.

A couple of months subsequent to being handed a 27-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems destined for incarceration.

Expected Jailing

The convicted plotter – who had been under home confinement in his estate while a set of legal procedures and appeals proceed – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the next few days, amidst growing rumors that he will be sent to a notorious top-security facility.

Previous Statements on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right former soldier displayed minimal sympathy for Brazil’s inmates.

“Why should we give these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be messed, end of story. That's my opinion.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up in prison, the only thing required is not rape, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Location Speculation

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, a group of four this week toured the prison in an obvious attempt to prevent the supreme court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, stated he predicted the septuagenarian figure to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious digestive problems – the consequence of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is very grave. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells holding 40 detainees: “That is virtually one square metre per inmate.

“We talked to the prisoners and they grumble, of course, of the horrible cuisine,” continued the senator.

Allies Speak Out

Lucas is not the lone figure voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's anticipated detention.

Writing in a prominent publication, one more backer, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its history”.

“It is an wrong that eats away the spirits of countless people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Divided Popular Response

It is possibly true due to the significant following Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. Yet his predicted jailing has also gladdened the feelings of numerous others who feel he should be imprisoned for planning to prevent the incoming president from assuming office – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the sitting president's political party, stated: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to obtain proper handling – but dignified care in prison. He can’t carry on being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have long celebrating the tough treatment of prisoners, had abruptly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that human rights were not for criminals – chosen to visit a jail to find out what conditions are really like,” he remarked.

“He is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting treatment”.

Potential Jail Conditions

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently houses about 14,000 prisoners, his probable assigned facility looks to be a adjacent jail for law enforcement and other “particular” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are much more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while living in the spectacular leader's home, around 20 kilometers away.

According to sources, the room Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – roughly the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and features a 130 square foot WC with a bathing area and a 130 square foot veranda. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a TV and additionally a small fridge in his cell as long as they were supplied by his family,” the report suggested.

Partisan Comments

He criticized the speculated idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his future in the {
