Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Famed For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at 89 Years Old.

The Academy Award-nominated performer Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us 89 years old.

The star, with filmography spanned National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, left this world in her residence in California’s Ojai. This announcement was shared in a statement by her daughter, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.

Dern, who appeared with her mother in a number of films such as Wild at Heart, described her as “my wonderful hero plus my special gift of a mother”, stating that she was by her side during her final moments.

“She was the greatest grandmother, mother, daughter, performer, creative as well as compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she stated. “We were lucky to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Early Career and Breakthrough

Her initial acting years featured minor parts in TV shows like The Fugitive while that decade saw her starring with actor Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.

That very year, the year 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed comedy drama the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her role earned Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.

1980s and Beyond

In the 1980s, she was seen in the thriller Black Widow plus funny follow-up Christmas Vacation while also joining Alice, a television series based on Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the following decade, she received a further supporting actress nomination for her part in Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the mother of her biological child the character played by Dern. The next year she received another nomination for her acting in the film Rambling Rose that also featured Dern.

“This was the picture which Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she flew Laura and I to London for a premiere and an event for us,” Ladd recalled about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”

The 1990s also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, with John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she acted as Laura Dern’s mom again. That period also saw her score Emmy nominations for performances in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Collaborations with Daughter

She persisted in performing with her daughter in dramatic comedies Daddy and Them, a movie, Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and Mike White’s comedy-drama series the program Enlightened. She also appeared with Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie and Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Her more recent television parts consisted of Ray Donovan, a drama plus Young Sheldon.

Writing and Directing

She also authored and oversaw the comedy Mrs Munck, a film which starred herself and previous spouse Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a great actor,” she said. “I was honored to direct him in a movie. Indeed, I stand as the only woman in history to direct her ex-husband. I humorously say: ‘I tell women, if you seek payback, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Personal Life

She was additionally a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a significant impact throughout my life”.

During 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with a respiratory illness and advised she only had half a year left but made a full recovery once her daughter moved her to a new hospital.

“If you can take your pain and prevent it from festering similar to a wound, rather utilize it to investigate, to illuminate the way for you and those around, then you are winning,” Ladd said.
